Anicult 2015

Last week, 4 June 2015, I flew to Surabaya. I had to ditch three classes and submit two assignments earlier--but with the right motivation I finished them quickly!! Holy shit I amazed myself.

Story is, few months ago there was a revelation that Yonezou Nekota-sensei would be coming to Anicult 2015 for a fanmeet. Taya and I are, well--we can never forget that one time when we googled Nekota-sensei's stuff and when we thought we found her undiscovered work we kinda shook each other and screamed 'WHAT IS THIS!! WHAT IS THIS! HOW COULD WE MISS THIS!' So it's--pretty much natural for us to be jumping in disbelief and joy when the fanmeet event was announced.

At first I hesitated because going to Surabaya means spending quite an amount of money and asking my dad for the money was unthinkable. The fanmeet ticket was not cheap either. But in the end I got so tempted into it (damn Taya), scraped some money together, and I managed to buy the tickets!! WOOHOO. I was really, REALLY excited. Andul at Surabaya had no problem letting us stay at her place. Taya and Jamur agreed to go--in secret. Taya in Japan and Jamur in Malaysia. Long story short, there's no way letting their family to know about the trip. But later Taya found out that they changed their policy (she's a scholarship student), first year students are not allowed to go out of the country. I was devastated because I was super excited with the idea of the four of us hanging out together--well, there was no helping it. Taya passed her Nekota Yonezou access entry to Andul.

The three of us bought the B type ticket. Means the one for June 6th and more merch in the goody bag (there were A B ticket for Saturday and C D for Sunday). It was listed in the badly designed site that the fanmeet would start at around 1 PM. But when we came the schedule said 3 PM. Jamur and I queued to buy Baozi Hana's Cardcaptor Sakura Touya/Yukito poster (super glad it was the first thing that we did as soon as we arrived because the queue got ridiculously long as more people came). Also bought the obligatory 50k badly designed Anicult book that doesn't provide any kind of useful information to get the cosplayers' autograph session ticket. (I wonder if this event had to cut their budget and hire random designer to invite those many amazing guests)

We went to get our Nekota Yonezou goody bag afterward and found out that they were also selling her books!! But it was closed until 8 PM because the person in charge was--in the middle of a competition or something at some place. Ok that was irritating. Dude get your priorities right, at least let someone else take care of the booth.

We wandered around. Andul took some photos with a group of One Piece cosplayers who happened to be foreigner--they asked me something like 'did you see Sabo? Onii-chan?' I was stunned, I'm not into One Piece so I didn't know who Sabo was. Andul came to the rescue. Then we heard girls screaming, went to check out and our guess was right. Turned out to be the photo session of Baozi Hana!! We quickly queued (we were so lucky to be last group to take photos with them because it was immediately their break time after us). The staffs were rushing us, I panicked and couldn't get my phone camera out, Andul came to the rescue again by calling my name and quickly snapped some photos of us with her phone SOB SOB THANKSSS. Actually I wanted a selfie. But after some thinking, I remembered the camera hates me and if it were a selfie, Baozi would be the one holding the camera and he would only take one snap for sure. That would be a bad photo----of me (Baozi Hana always look wonderful no matter what they do).

After some more wandering, we finally got into the fanmeeting room. SURPRISE SURPRISE Baozi Hana were attending it too!! They sat on the VIP-reserved seat, front row, with another cosplayer whom I think was probably DD Tenka. On the stage sat three people. The Japanese to Indonesian interpreter, Nekota Yonezou-sensei (whose appearance reminds you of short-haired Paku Romi), and her Libre Publishing editor. There was also a Japanese/Indonesian (?) to English interpreter.

I regret not taking notes but I want to remember these no matter what, so here are the QAs in random order (also inaccurate, only as far as I can remember. And I don't JP!! Based on what I heard from both interpreters) :

Q : (Basic profile)
Nekota-sensei : (she lives in Osaka, but in the more--rural area? I laughed because Taya is also staying in Osaka and it's amusing to think that she was going to meet Nekota-sensei in Indonesia who comes from Osaka)

Q : What is your favorite food?
Nekota-sensei : I don't have any kind of favorite food in particular, but when I arrived here I ate some delicious crabs! So I like them!

Q : Since when you started drawing manga and when did you start drawing sex scenes?
Nekota-sensei : At age eight, I started drawing. My wall was white, I drew a lot on it with my mother. I started drawing kisu-kisu scenes when I was fourteen and without I realize I had drawn a lot of BL. I'm often found being absent-minded...

Q : When was your debut?
Nekota-sensei : In Tsuyogari, the third chapter.

Q : From all of your works, who is your favorite character?
Nekota-sensei : Maya! Because I put all traits of an ideal guy of mine into him. (I REALLY LOVE HIM TOO, SENSEI!!)

Q : If there's a manga of yours that would be adapted into anime, which one would it be?
Nekota-sensei : I think it's Mousou Elektel because it has more emotions and conflicts, I think it will be more interesting to be adapted into anime. Also, I already have a seiyuu in mind.
*Entire room bursts 'WHO?! DARE?!'*
Q : Who is it, sensei?
Nekota-sensei : When I came to the studio I watched Tomoaki Maeno-san recording, and I think he fit Shunpei perfectly. So it's the same as Drama CD.

Q : Do you have certain preference of a guy's appearance?
Nekota-sensei : I don't really have a preference. But I like megane. I like megane a lot! (LOL SENSEI this must be why she created Megane Cafe Glass)

Q : Where do you get your inspirations from?
Nekota-sensei : From everywhere. Like--for example, when I was eating today, there was a couple in front of me being lovey-dovey and feeding each other. I was like, 'aaaaww.' That is the kind of scenes that inspire me. That cute couple is right here, Baozi and Hana.
*Baozi Hana looking very embarrassed and room explodes* (OH MY GOD HOW COULD THEY DO THIS TO ME)

During press conference (which I didn't attend), Sensei asked the audience what kind of genre their favorite was. Many of them answered 'SM', she was surprised. But she laughed and went on saying 'I like it too-------and I'm an S, sorry, I'm sorry.' (I think the SM we are referring here is something like seme bullying uke)

When it was the time for some fan questions, the MC/interpreter offered the mic to the cosplayers first. She gave it to Hana. Super shy Hana looked confused. And when I thought he was going to pass the mic to Baozi like usual, he whispered something to the MC.

'What is Sensei's favorite type of uke like?' the MC asked.

What. WHAT!!!!!! NONE OF US SAW IT COMING!! Holy shit holy shit holy snsfshbbjebknl HANA WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN WHY DID YOU HAVE TO ASK SOMETHING LIKE THAT!! WHAT IS YOUR MOTIVE I think not even Baozi expected it, he laughed and looked at Hana (very cute, nice).

After Sensei finally calmed down from laughing too, she answered, 'I like the kawaii type, like Hana-san,' which sent us burst into screaming again and Hana embarrassed. (I think there was a confusion, like probably Sensei couldn't tell which one was Hana and which one was Baozi but it got sorted out in the end)

Fan question : How can Sensei draw such beautiful bodies?
Nekota-sensei : In high school, I took art. So I have done some nude portraits. And when I'm working, sometimes I just google 'beautiful guy body.'

Wow I got tired just from writing that--recalling the event makes me laugh. After the QA session, we proceeded to the autograph session. Because my ticket was the B type, I could get two autographs. One on the autograph board, and another on Hidoku Shinaide Akira's Story. When I put them on the table, Nekota-sensei looked at the book and seemed impressed, she went 'waaaaah!' The Japanese to Indonesian interpreter was also excited, she pointed at it saying 'aahhh! I love it! Very adorable and sad, it becomes the banner here too I love it so much!' (the huge fanmeet banner was this beautiful image)

I put my name tag on the table (attached to the goody bag for you to write your name so Sensei can copy your name easily). I wrote 'Cicilia/シシリア', the interpreter asked me which one I would like Sensei to use. I replied 'whichever is easier for Sensei.' First, Sensei signed the book with katakana--which went smoothly. Then time to sign on the board.

To Ci
To Cic
To Cicc
'GOMENNASAI!'
Honestly, I expected it. People always, always, spell my name wrong. So when she panicked I was completely chill and told her 'it's okay! Daijoubu!' so did the intepreter. Sensei talked to her editor, I think she was asking about what to do with it. The editor tapped her on the shoulder and I only heard her saying something like 'daijoubu, blablabla, ganbare' calmly. And she went back to what she was doing before, drying the ink on my signed book. I find it quite amusing, I think her editor is the calm-cold type!

Sensei apologized once more as she added a dot on top of the letter 'c' and turned it into a heart. Then we thanked each other, shook hands (may this be a blessing for me to be able to draw better), and I packed my stuffs.

Spent some time looking around the artists' alley and queued for the autograph session. When it was almost my turn, one staff next to me talked, 'are you nervous? Because I am! Standing here makes me feel really nervous, I can't stand still I keep moving around restlessly! It's like--senpai finally notices me.' OH YES I COULD FEEL MY HANDS TREMBLING I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHY!!

I thought the ticket only let you to get one autograph only, but turned out I got each cosplayer's signature! Amazing!

We still had some more time before 8 PM (Jamur wanted to get Nekota Yonezou's books), so we went down and grabbed some good ramen. Also talked a bit with Taya via LINE video call (courtesy of Andul's phone credit). At around 8.10, we went back to the hall and found out that all the books were sold out. Holy shit. Jamur was upset. Well, that bad management was the one to blame.

That's all! The next day we took our plane back to Jakarta (and Jamur Malaysia). As soon as I got home I showered, took a rest for a while, and--did my assignment for Monday half-awake frickkkk.

Sushi Kiosk's baked salmon at Surabaya's airport was so good. I'm happy!! Satisfied!! I had fun! I thank my friends for such quality time! It's really too bad Taya couldn't come ;__; we sent her photos of empty chair during dinner saying 'yo supposed to be your seat here!!' Hope we all will be able to go on trip together next time!

By the way I tweeted something to Nekota-sensei (with Taya's help, obviously) and she replied!

I didn't expect that. She took her time to reply everyone who went to her fanmeet event, so nice!!
